Comparison
Strength vs Hypertrophy Rep Ranges
3–5 reps or 8–12? How strength and hypertrophy rep ranges overlap and diverge.
Overview
Lower reps with heavier loads build strength skill and still grow muscle. Moderate reps are efficient for hypertrophy volume. You can — and should — use both across a week.
**Strength bias (3–6):** Neural skill Heavier top sets Longer rests
**Hypertrophy bias (6–12+):** Easier set targets Great for isolation Slightly higher metabolic stress
**Verdict:** Run heavy compounds in the mid-single to six range, then hypertrophy accessories. Pure 15–20 junk burnouts are optional, not required.
Weekly schedule
Strength day— Heavy compounds
- 3–5 reps
Hypertrophy day— Volume
- 6–12 reps
Set and rep guidance
Count hard sets toward the muscle — not just the ego lift. Failure on every set is unnecessary.
Progression
Strength blocks lower reps; hypertrophy blocks raise sets. Deload between blocks.
Who it's for
Lifters confused by conflicting rep-range dogma.
