How Many Sets Per Muscle Per Week?
Weekly hard-set targets for hypertrophy, with beginner-to-advanced ranges and examples.
Overview
A practical hypertrophy band for many lifters is roughly 10–20 hard sets per major muscle per week. Beginners often grow on the low end; advanced lifters may explore higher with recovery to match.
Weekly schedule
Example UL week— Distribute sets
- Chest 6–8 sets day 1
- Chest 6–8 sets day 3
Example PPL week— Two push days
- Split pressing volume across sessions
Set and rep guidance
Count sets near failure with good form. Warm-ups do not count. Overlapping compounds contribute to multiple muscles.
Progression
Add sets for lagging muscles first. If everything feels flat, deload before adding more.
